The Centre of the Earth’s crust is really a fascinating thing. We are usually taught that the earth’s crust contains core and mantle but some scientists theorize that centre of the earth is completely hollow and there may be species of all aliens living under this crust. Although the theories have been proven to be wrong, still they fascinate many researchers to find out more about the centre of our planet.
The race of discovering the core of earth dates back to several decades. America and Russia started drilling the deepest hole into the earth. Both of them were trying to find out what is beneath the earth and the whole world was looking at them hoping to see some fascinating discovery.
The results of efforts by Russia is something called the Kola Superdeep Borehole and it’s much more interesting than you can imagine.
We have always been told that the Earth’s crust has a mantle and core but what if this is wrong? If there is something else living inside that crust? To find out realities, Russia and America started researching in the 1960s and 1970s to find out more about it.

Both countries kept digging until they couldn’t go further. They used heavy equipment and enormous metals that were able to break through even toughest materials on the earth. Soon, America quit the race and the enormous drills were fired up. They called it Project Mohole. America again started drilling from the Pacific coast of Mexico in 1961.

America used six massive buoys 200 feet under the water in a circular pattern to ensure the success of Project Mohole. The Navy barges were actually used for drilling. Special instructions were given to the team to handle heavy rigs. The hugeness of the project needed special caution but the project had to be closed soon due to lack of funds.
A decade later, Russians started drilling their super hole at the sight of Kola Peninsula on May 24, 1970. They organized their own digging team. Within 24 years, the drillers managed to go a third of the way through Baltic continental crust which means that they had already drilled the deepest man-made hole in the world.
The illustration below shows that the Russian Borehole was deeper than the actual height of Mount Everest. The country commemorated the drillers of the Super hole in 1987 by printing many stamps.
Many massive rigs were used to dig the Russian super hole. The rigs were so dangerous that the team had to assign special workers on the rigs. These workers were always ready to reposition the rigs. Whenever a rig jerked to a side, the workers readily repositioned it to its actual position.
A tower was made on the Kola Superdeep Borehole which is shown in the picture below. This tower still stands at the sight of the borehole.
The goal of drilling project of Russians was to reach an amazing depth of 49,000 feet. A single hole was difficult to reach this depth so several holes were dug which branched off to the main hole. The deepest branch of the hole was SG-3 which reached the depth of 40,230 feet in 1989.

At the depth of almost 41,000 feet, the team had to stop drilling in 1992 because the conditions were getting out of control. The temperature at that depth was almost 600 degrees Fahrenheit where drilling was completely impossible at that time.
The drilling stopped in 1992 but the actual project didn’t stop until 2005. The project was abandoned and everything was scrapped and dismantled. The place is now open for the visitors.
It’s unfortunate that such a huge project was simply left to rot. You may never notice the actual place of Super Hole digging while visiting there. All that remains is a nine-inch steel cap covering the opening of the hole today.

The race of Russian team and American team although didn’t lead to the actual goal but it led to many scientific discoveries. Many important items like microscopic plankton fossils were discovered at the bottom of the hole.

The remains of the huge project still stand as the reminder of such an enormous effort of thousands of workers. At least, the theory of Aliens in the centre of the earth was proved wrong.
