The Accidental Discovery of a Secret Government Facility that is going to make you somewhat uncomfortable.
We often find lost items on the streets or in our workplaces. These items may be more or less valuable but usually, none of them is capable of changing your whole day. Still, there is a man who found something that was much more than a lost dollar bill or a car key.
Garret Graff, a historian and political author, didn’t think much about an item one of his work colleagues found on the parking garage floor. But when Graff closely inspected, he saw something that increased his journalistic curiosity. The truth of that thing led one of the most deeply buried secret of America.
Garrett Graff is a political author who has covered many important hot-bottom issues like War on Terror or the Presidential election of 2008. However, his most important and record-breaking research started when his colleague handed him something important.

“It was a government ID for someone from the intelligence community,” Graff told to NPR in an interview. His friend found it on the floor of the parking garage and gave it to Graff so that he can return it to its original owner.

Graff noticed something different about the ID. He saw a step by step instructions on the way toward an unknown location covered on the back of this ID. Due to his inquisitive nature, Graff couldn’t stop himself from going to that unknown location. So, he used Google Maps to locate the direction and the destination surprised him completely.

The directions of the ID led him to the peak of a mountain 70 miles outside of Washington, D.C. The road ended at the peak known as Raven Rock and there was nothing but the face of the mountain.

Upon recalling his memory of a previous trip here, he realized that there were big concrete doors. “This little guard shack, chain-link fence, and then this set of concrete bunker doors beyond,” he said. What was that?

It seemed like a facility that was completely hidden. There was no record of it on the map. Graff decided to find out what exactly is it so he started researching and the results were shocking.

What he found was a structure named as Raven Rock Mountain Complex or simply Sire R. Seems normal? Let’s put it in this way. Graff had discovered a hidden nuclear fallout shelter. His research uncovered some horrifying, some comforting and overall fascinating information about the nuclear war contingency plan of the United States.

The bunker was constructed by the sanction of Truman administration in 1951 after the start of Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union. The team who constructed the New York City Subway was used to construct the bunker. So, how they kept such a massive thing, a secret?
A labourer from that time named Gene Bowman who worked on $1.35 per hour was interviewed to find out the truth. His statement was “They just said they were building a tunnel. Wasn’t nobody interested in what they were doing?” Once dug, however, it didn’t look like a simple tunnel”
Graff told NPR that the Raven Rock Complex was a backup Pentagon. He stated the complex as a free-standing city with many different facilities in it. The complex had two blast doors of 34-ton each to thwart nuclear blast.
Inside these doors was a 100,000 feet office that provided all the major rooms that the military officials may need to operate. It included infirmaries, utility areas and cafeterias. The facility was capable of accommodating 1,400 V.I.Ps of America. It had rooms for the president, his cabinet and all of his officials. An interesting thing was that there were no rooms for spouses of these officials.

Raven Rock was a facility that contained a complete plan for the specific operations of the country i.e. post office or IRS. That’s right. The government is not going to let the people off the tax hook easily even in the case of nuclear destruction. They had made a post-bomb plan for IRS.
Some other federal departments were also assigned different tasks in the case of a nuclear attack. The parks department of the country was assigned the task to set up a refugee camp, the post office was charged to find out who died in the blast while the department of agriculture would divvy up rations.

There was a time in Cold War when a nuclear attack became so imminent that Raven Rock Complex remained fully manned and operated 24 hours per day until 1992. The complex was also activated again after 9/11 attacks.

Although Graff discovered only one bunker through the directions given on ID card, his further research uncovered half a dozen or more such bunkers which were made for doomsday.
There was also some other doomsday shelter made by the government like one made near Colorado Springs in Cheyenne Mountains. It was built in the 1950s to defend Canada and the US from air attacks. It included reservoirs of fuel and water, offices, gyms and even a Subway Sandwich joint.
The research of Graff uncovered some disturbing facts. The civilian population will be left without any help for months at a time while a small number of government officials will be saved in the bunkers.

Graff dove much deeper to find out more about it and wrote a book named Raven Rock: The Story of the U.S. Government’s Secret Plan to Save Itself.
It’s fascinating as well as horrifying how the government has planned to leave the population without any support. Graff has uncovered one of the biggest secrets which helped to understand many things.
