A dream house is one with a big porch, a grassy lawn, a huge bedroom and a beautiful in-ground pool in the backyard. Unfortunately, most of us are not able to afford all these things. In fact, most of us cannot afford an in-ground pool in the backyard. But, what if you get a pool without any effort or a hefty price tag?
A couple from Australia had no plans to install any type of pool on their ground but they ended up having one accidentally. One day, when the couple peered out of their window, they saw something jaw breaking. A pool had appeared in their backyard which was threatening to swallow whole house.
Lynn and Ray McKay lived in a suburban area of Queensland, called Basin Pocket. They were living a peaceful life until the day they say a shocking thing in the backyard of their house.
A massive sinkhole had appeared overnight that was big enough to threaten the residents. McKay didn’t know what to do so he called up the local authorities to check what it is. The team was also shocked to see such a huge sinkhole appeared naturally.
The sinkhole was not something ordinary. The authorities had to do something rapidly because the sinkhole was growing enormously which could eat the whole backyard of McKay and ultimately his home. Thankfully, they soon found the mystery of the giant hole.
The officials found that McKay’s house was built on the site of an old coal mining shaft dated back to 1900s. The couple already knew that there was a coal mining shaft nearby their house but they didn’t know that they were actually standing at that shaft.
The sinkhole kept growing rapidly. Within seven days, the hole was already 30 feet deep and 20 feet wide and was still growing enormously. The residents of the house were immediately shifted to a nearby hotel for the sake of safety.
The authorities were not able to find out the reason for the growth of the sinkhole while the interest of people was increasing rapidly. Soon, the authorities figured out the reason. The timber used at the top of the old shaft had rotted away which caused the ground to collapse.
The team started draining the sinkhole as soon as possible. Once done, they loaded the old shaft with one ton of dirt in order to avoid the shaft to collapse again.
It may be just a normal sinkhole for authorities but it was an unforgettable chapter of lives for the couple. They soon shifted back to their home. Ray wanted to make the unsettling chapter as a memory. So, they took a piece of wood that was pulled from the sinkhole and used it to make a sign on the strange event.
Seems like a happy ending? Not at all. Just after six months, the couple started noticing something disturbing. The sinkhole started sinking again.
Just imagine you wake up a morning and see such a huge sinkhole in your backyard—and not once, but twice. That would be pretty terrifying. There should be a permanent solution to such a dangerous thing in order to ensure safety.
