Abandoned buildings are always met with a little apprehension, and abandoned hospitals are by far the most scary. Just thinking about the scenes that have taken place there, and what could be left behind, is enough to deter anyone from entering a vacant healthcare facility.
A photographer exploring an abandoned hospital in Troy, New York, expected to run into a little creepiness on his adventure — but he ended up getting much more of a scare than he bargained for.
Photographer Joshua Gold is used to the unexpected; after years of searching for the perfect shot, he’d often find himself in odd situations. The day he decided to explore the abandoned Leonard Hospital in Troy, New York, however, proved to take him on one of the most extreme adventures he’d ever had.
The hospital was in complete disarray. The rooms and hallways had taken on an eerie quality after years of vacancy, and the furniture and devices that were left behind made the hospital look more like a madhouse than a medical facility.
It wasn’t long before Joshua got the sense that he wasn’t alone. With all the death this place had seen, was it at all surprising if the building was haunted? He cautiously continued his exploration, snapping photos along the way…
…and that’s when the noises began.
As clear as day, Joshua heard the pained cries of an unidentifiable creature. Not sure whether they came from human or beast, he rushed toward the noise, determined not to let fear get the best of him. He had to find whatever was making such a terrible wail.
His search brought him to a wall. It was now 3 a.m. Convinced the noises behind the sheetrock were made in distress, he left to retrieve some tools and a ladder.
Now armed with a ladder, he peered over the two-inch-thick drywall — and was shocked. It was a weeks-old kitten, crying for help!
Joshua had no choice. He carefully drilled a hole large enough to allow him to reach the kitten.
Pulling the little guy to safety wasn’t easy; the kitten was terrified and wouldn’t budge. Joshua eventually coaxed it out of its hiding place and rushed it home.
There, the exhausted kitten took a long nap — after some eating, playing, and cuddling, of course.
Joshua named his new friend Leonard after the place they’d met. Leonard seemed to be doing well, but unfortunately, Joshua couldn’t keep him.
This actually wasn’t the first time Joshua saved an animal during a photography expedition; his home was already full of rescued pets, so keeping little Leonard was out of the question. Joshua took to YouTube, where he posted a video of the rescue.
“While I was photographing the abandoned Leonard Hospital, I heard something crying on the third floor. I realized there was a kitten trapped [there], but couldn’t quite figure out where; at first I thought he was in the heating ducts,” he wrote on the video’s caption.
Joshua detailed how he’d purchased the ladder from a 24-hour Walmart and then carefully bored a hole in the drywall to retrieve the fluffy kitten.
Joshua figured Leonard got separated from his mother after falling behind the wall. He was sure the kitten would’ve died if he hadn’t saved him.
Joshua brought Leonard to a local animal foster care center, where he awaits adoption by a loving family.
Lucky for Leonard, Joshua knew what he was doing, and he never gave up hope. This just goes to show that sometimes the best things in life are found when you least expect them!
